News in the loop - Access Bedford to provide sign language interpreters at mayoral hustings

Access Bedford, a charity set up to make Bedford Borough more accessible, will be providing sign language interpreters at the Bedford Independent and BBC Three Counties Radio mayoral hustings this month.

The hustings taking place on 18 April is a chance for mayoral candidates to be grilled on the issues facing Bedford Borough today, such as knife crime, housing, homelessness, transport, education and health.

Access Bedford was set up in 2013 to work with the deaf and hard of hearing community.

Since then they’ve organised a number of awareness campaigns and events to highlight the everyday barriers faced by those who are deaf or hard hearing.

They have also provided sign language interpreters at events such as Bedford Park Concerts, BedPop science labs and Bedford Park Run, to make them more accessible to as many people as possible.

A spokesperson for Access Bedford said: “Deaf people vote too and it’s really important that they have an opportunity to scrutinise the candidates in same way that hearing people can.

“They can then make an informed decision about who they think will be the person councillor or mayor for them based on how those candidates respond, in the same way everyone else can.”

The hustings event is free to attend but those wishing to come need to pre-register. To register to attend please email 3cr@bbc.co.uk.

It will be held in the marquee at the Bedford Blues’ ground, Goldington Road on 18 April from 5:30pm and is due to finish at 7pm.

Bedfordians will go to the polls just two weeks later on 2 May to choose the Borough’s mayor and their Ward and Parish councillors.

Access Bedford is a registered charity and relied on donations to provide its services. If you would like to find out more about the group or make a donation, email: accessbedford@outlook.com.
